Impact 360 Meeting 2012

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

February means it is time for the Impact 360 Summit in Atlanta. Hosted by managing partners Mary Beth Kirkpatrick and Mike Graiger.

I have worked with Mary Beth in particular for more than a decade as she has helped me make sure we are organized within our office. Organization is the key to allow me to spend the maximum amount of time possible with each and every one of our patients. Amongst other things, it is how we are able to have on time appointments 99% of the time. Thanks for the help MB!!

The following is a synopsis of the weekend. I hope you enjoy this little bit of light reading!

Thursday February 16th, 2012

This is my travel day and I wanted to share a very positive travel experience. Not something you normally hear about when people talk about travel but perhaps there is a tip that you can use for yourself. I had a tight time schedule with a 5:30 pm flight to Toronto out of Fredericton and an 8:00 pm flight from Toronto to Atlanta. Last year I picked up a NEXUS card and became a member of the Trusted Traveller Program. Imagine clearing through Customs in Toronto Airport and being through security screening in less than 5 minutes. This was my experience on this trip and consistent with other trips I have been on. So my tip to you is look into getting a NEXUS card. Air Canada flights were smooth and essentially on time. Nice way to start the trip!

The Summit started with an awesome breakfast at 7:45 in the morning. As participants trickled in I was able to catch up with old friends and colleagues and make some new friends as well. I was seated at a table with Dr. Brett Eckley and as his self described ”boss” Melanie Eckley (aka his wife) and with Dr. Lisa King and her senior office manager Phyllis Gamboa. Great seat mates and great new friends made right away.

The morning session started with everyone taking a couple of minutes to introduce themselves. We got right into it with a great discussion on how the internet and social media has impacted orthodontics from the consumers persepctive. Great  discussion on how offices are making sure they are able to reach their folks the very best way possible. Social Media sites such as Twitter and Facebook are where our patients are spending much of their time. We reviewed concepts that will help us reach out to people through this ever evolving mode.

After a break for a nice lunch we were right back into it. We had an interesting discussion about the use of a scanner instead of impressions. There are only a few offices that have a scanner so I was able to speak to the experience of what scanning is like for patients. We were early into this technology and I am excited about what this has brought to our office. Who likes impressions!!!

We then started into my favorite part of the meeting. We went around the room to share what is the best thing implemented in your office in 2011. Terrific ideas, very clever and innovative ideas that I will definately bring back to Hatheway Orthodontics. Stay tuned!!!

After a much needed bio break we jumped right into the latest and greatest in technology. This is where Mike Graiger shines. He is as knowledgeable about technology and how the latest innovations can be implemented in an orthodontic practice as anyone I know. Suffice to say that the advances in technology mean advances in speed. This is very important because we have multiple offices. Speed allows us to view the images and patient data between offices or while I am at home very quickly. We all have been frustrated waiting for something to download to our computers. As the technology improves we work to stay on the leading edge to ensure we can operate as efficiently as we can. Great job Mike as always!!

A quick wrap up discussion of a hodge podge of topics and it was time to wrap it up for the day. Excellent first day at the Summit. Time to hit the gym for a great workout so Omar doesn’t can me as a client!

John didn't get much of a break!!

Back to work at 7:45 with another fantastic healthy breakfast (shout out to JW Marriott staff). We moved away from study club format to a lecture format this morning. Dr. Leigh Bayer Curtis joined our table for the day. Like myself, she joined her father’s orthodontic practice. Leigh joined Peter in 2004.

We were blessed to have John McGill from the McGill – Hill group come and present to us about the state of the economy. John is a very well respected member of the consulting community and had great insight into the trends of the economy and how that will influence our lives. It was heavily US based, particularly with the Presidential Election happening in 2012. As we know as Canadians, what happens south of the border has significant influence on us in Canada. I believe this picture tells the story regarding his presentation. Lets just say John didn’t get much of a break!!

After the break John went over in detail the proposed tax changes coming assuming Obama was to win the election in November. The changes that are coming to the American Tax structure are quite significant. It will be interesting to see how this will impact the election this fall.

In order to maximize the time we had remaining, Mary Beth put together a working lunch where we went around the room and talked about the best thing that happened in each persons office in 2011. We started that yesterday and we were able to finish that today at lunch. Great stuff all around.

Time for the final push before we wrap things up. Back to a discussion about many different topics ranging from clinical excellence to ideas on how to team build with the staff in the office. A terrific forum to share terrific ideas.

Thanks to Mary Beth, Mike and all the Impact 360 team members. Another successful weekend with clients. February 8th and 9th, 2013 is marked in the calendar.

Until next time my friends!!

Dr. Bob’s Weekend at Invisalign HQ

Monday, February 13th, 2012

I had the great pleasure to attend the Invisalign Treat Headquarters in San Jose, Costa Rica for the inaugural Canadian Study Club. We had eight doctors from across Canada along with Canadian Invisalign guru Dr. Sam Daher (www.orthostyle.com) to provide continuing education and support to the participants. The following is a summary of the weekends events.

Thursday, February 9th

The weekend started with an early date on an airplane Thursday morning. I arrived in San Jose at 2 in the afternoon and within 20 minutes I was checked into the host hotel. I met up with my Invisalign  rep Craig McIntyre, along with his boss and longtime friend of mine Bill Oldman and one other Canadian rep, Jeremy Goetz. A few of the other docs started to arrive and by 8pm a crew of us were at dinner catching up. It was an early start to the day Friday so it was time for the quilts by 10:30. That was really 12:30 Atlantic time so I was getting close to being awake for 24 hours. Rest was needed!!

Friday, February 10th

We rounded all the doctors up for an early bus ride to the Invisalign Facility. The participants were Peter Duncan (Victoria, BC), Tarek El Bialy (Edmonton, AB), Frank Janisse (Windsor, ON), Ali Shojaei (Toronto, ON), Ron Sperber (Whitby, ON), Barry White (Guelph, ON), Dan Stuart (Dartmouth, NS) and myself.  The facility was amazing. I was floored by the sheer magnitude of the place. I think the photo of us with 1/2 of the operations area in the background speaks for itself. This is less than half the facility.

Canadian Docs at Align Facility

By far the best part of the weekend was I met my own lab technician. Her name is Natalia Barrientos and has been my lab technician for over a year.  We spent over two hours reviewing cases, discussing communication between us and making sure we put out the best work we can each and every time an Invisalign treatment plan is developed. Thank you Natalia for being a great host and such a terrific lab technican.

In the afternoon we had presentations by the staff orthodontist manager Dr. Douglas Brandt, who is a Canadian I might add, and by Dr. Paula Alvarado a senior orthodontist with Align technologies. Both were fantastic lectures that will help all of us a great deal I am sure.

The evening concluded with a dinner at the hotel with the group and a few stories at the bar for those of us who decided to stay out a little late!!

Sam Daher reigning over his fiefdom at dinner

Saturday, February 11th

After being unsuccessful on Friday night trying to convince Sam that his lecture Saturday should start at 11:00 and end at 11:30 with a 15 minute break for coffee built in, we all arrived at 8 am for his lecture. Yes we all arrived on time too!! Sam is a world renowned expert in treating orthodontic problems with Invisalign and he did not disappoint. We covered lots of cases and he shared many tips on how to ensure the outcomes are exactly the way we want. It was a terrific two hours of continuing education. The balance of the morning we presented cases to each other, picked apart the processes, techniques and basically shared our knowledge.

At noon the Study Club was a wrap. Some stayed for an extra day. Some stayed for an extra week and some, like myself, were on our way to the airport for a 3 pm flight back to Toronto. We departed on time leaving behind +28 degree celsius temperatures but brought back a wealth of knowledge. Thanks to Bill, Craig and Jeremy for being awesome hosts, to Doug, Paula, Ted Callaghan (VP and General Manager) and Jason Ramos (Senior R&D doctor) from Align in Costa Rica for their hospitality and to Sam for sharing his knowledge. Terrific meeting with terrific people in a great location with great results. Pretty hard to beat that.

Hatheway to help with Mike Fitz games

Basketball | FHS, LHHS to play at Currie centre

By The Daily Gleaner

The Mike Fitz Memorial Basketball Games has signed a three-year presenting sponsorship agreement with Hatheway Orthodontics.

For the fourth year, Fredericton High and Leo Hayes High schools’ junior varsity and varsity basketball teams will take to the court in support of the Mike Fitzgerald Memorial Fund .

The fund is named in honour of Mike Fitzgerald, who played basketball for both high schools, and lost his battle with brain cancer in 2008. Administered by the Fredericton Community Foundation, the fund was set up as a way to pay back the support Mike and his family received during his illness. The fund awards scholarships and bursaries to deserving students at both high schools and has provided financial support to young basketball players who would not have otherwise been able to play.

‘Mike hated the fact that not everyone had access to the opportunities to participate in local sports as he did,’ Don Fitzgerald, Mike’s father, said in a news release. ‘He was determined to help disadvantaged youth, and give a little back to the community that had given him so much through his life and illness.’ ‘Mike’s desire to give back to his community has inspired many people, including me,’ Bob Hatheway said. ‘Giving back to the community that supported me is something I believe in too, and this event is a great way to honour Mike’s memory and profile some great local athletes.’ This year’s games will be all be held on the main floor of the Richard J. Currie Center.

The girls’ varsity teams will tip off on Friday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m., with the boys’ game starting at 8 p.m. The junior varsity games will be held on the following day, Saturday, Jan. 28. The girls’ game starts at 7:15 p.m. and the boys’ at 9:15 p.m.

Admission is $5 per evening. Raffle tickets are also available for a chance to win one of three prizes: shoot from centre court to win a car, an iPad 2, and an Xbox 360 prize package. Tickets are $10 each or three for $20. All proceeds from the games will go to the Mike Fitzgerald Memorial Fund.
